Abstract
This data set combines article level usage data with advertised or actual open access article processing charge (APC) costs, and institutional membership fee where applicable, to demonstrate a method to calculate a cost per use for open access APCs. The article-level usage data included is for three sets of articles from open access journals: metrics as of September 15, 2016 for 591 articles published in PLOS ONE from July 1 to July 7, 2013; metrics as of August 26, 2016 for 165 articles published in PLOS Biology from January 1 to December 31, 2013; metrics as of October 29, 2015 for 17 articles published in BioMed Central journals in 2012. Data for both sets of PLOS articles were obtained openly via ALM Reports. Data from BioMed Central articles were obtained from BioMed Central and published with the permission of BioMed Central.
