Abstract
This thesis explores the professional lives of missionary and local female doctors in Sichuan, China, from 1900 to 1930s. This thesis recovers the history of initiating gendered healthcare and medical education for local women by using archival sources, missionary reports and books, and personal memoirs. In addition, this thesis analyzes the challenges and breakthroughs of women in medicine, contextualizing their achievements within the broader social and cultural shifts of the era. This work highlights how these female professionals contributed to the modernization of healthcare while redefining women’s roles in early 20th-century Chinese history.
