This thesis presents a method based on the Gauss-Seidel technique for the steady state analysis of a power system containing series compensated 1-ines. This approach has been extended to the analysis of . a faulted power system including the effect of system dissymmetry produced by unbalanced capacitor short circuits. The performance aspects of d-c transmission links have also been examined and the mathematical models of unbalanced convertor operation using constant firing delay- and equidistant firing control have boon developed. The effect of the simplifying assumptions used to assess convertor operation were considered and it was found that these assumptions introduce negligible errors under normal operating conditions. A graphical method for quick assessment of the convertor operation has been developed. This method can be conveniently used for a composite a-c/d-c system study using a network analyzer. The steady state digital solution of convertor stations is discussed in the thesis and a normalizing technique suitable for use in a composite a-c/d.-c system study is presented. A digital computer composite system load flow program using the Gauss-Seidel technique was developed and its use in a parallel a-c/d-c system study is demonstrated in the thesis. The composite system performance at the inception of a single phase to ground fault including the effects of system dissymmetries at the fault and capacitor locations and the effect of system voltage unbalance on the convertor performance is briefly reported. The single phase fault study was extended to a composite system transient stability analysis in which the d-c line current changes and the convertor firing controls were also simulated.
