Abstract

Reliability considerations are an important aspect of overall power system design, planning and operation. This thesis illustrates the application of probability techniques to the reliability evaluation of a three phase HVDC bridge composed of mercury arc valves. The approach is developed by which the number of spare valves required to achieve a predetermined reliability level can be obtained for single and multiple bridge configurations. The inversion equipment represents only a part of an overall HVDC transmission scheme. The basic approach is extended in the thesis to the development of a transmission capability probability and frequency table which includes all the major system components. Equivalent simplified probability models are developed from the individual component Markov models. A numerical transmission capability table is illustrated for a hypothetical HVDC configuration:
