Abstract
Plankton is at the base of the food chain in the pelagic zone of lakes. The phytoplankters produce organic matter which the zooplankters
pass to higher trophic levels. Upon dying and settling, the plankters affect the nature of the bottom sediments.
The aim of the present study was to describe the plankton of Little Bear Lake with respect to standing crop, vertical distribution, and seasonal changes in quantity and quality. Whenever possible, the findings were related to temperature, transparency, and chemical conditions of the water.
The study was undertaken in conjunction with a general lake survey made by the Fisheries Branch of the Saskatchewan Department of Natural Resources from Tay to September, 1960.
