Abstract
Only Human is a collection of eleven short prose fictions that examines moral decision making and human responses to difficult circumstances. Restrictive gender roles, marital discord, and domesticity feature heavily in the stories and invite the reader to consider ethical boundaries and ask questions such as: what scenarios might push someone to do things they’d otherwise consider abhorrent? Why do these stories matter? Who are we in difficult moments? The characters grapple with careers, relationships, traumas, and other difficult circumstances. Desperation often drives the characters to act in uncharacteristic ways. The stories are written from a realist lens meant to discomfort the reader and show that there are no easy answers. My intention is that readers spend time in the eye of these stories and ponder these difficult experiences, knowing that the characters’ lives will never be the same. I hope the reader recognizes aspects of themself and their own life in Only Human, and that they emerge feeling like they were part of human experience and its complexities.
