Abstract
The need for availability information has grown tremendously during the last decade. In Canada, the Canadian Electrical Association (CEA) is playing a key role in the collection and analysis of generating unit performance data. The Equipment Reliability Information System (ERIS) of the CEA was developed to satisfy the needs of Canadian utilities for a uniform method of recording the performance of generation and transmission equipment.
This thesis presents suitable unit models for capacity reliability studies compatible with the data provided in the present CEA data collection system. Data on generating unit operating experience for the calendar years 1977 through 1979 were supplied by CEA and used in this thesis.
Anomalies have existed for many years in estimating the various model parameters. The CEA data collection system makes it possible to calculate accurately the required model parameters. New methods for estimating the various model parameters are proposed. The generating unit models presented are consistent with the CEA data format and complement the statistics presently generated by the CEA. The developed models are applied to the IEEE-Reliability Test System to calculate the reliability indices. These models are simple and relatively easy to use and can be applied to practical power systems.
