Abstract
The thesis establishes the feasibility of using the ISM band for a wireless network to connect students to campus computer network. A variable rate, asymmetric link with a maximum capacity of 200 kb/s per user can be provided within the regulation of the ISM band. A system with four basestation sites covers the city of Saskatoon with a total capacity of 24 Mb/s.
The feasibility is established with a complete link analysis that includes, line of sight path loss, multipath fading, log-normal shadowing, spreading gain, antenna gain, receiver thermal noise and system noise figure.
The practicality is established by a system analysis of a receiver and transmitter for the variable rate modem. A three finger RAKE receiver is shown to provide good performance for a reasonable cost.
