Abstract

A mathematical calculation of the extent of retinal coagulation due to heating by focussed laser light was made. The basic premise of the mathematical model adopted was the assumption that any tissue at the back of the eye rising above 70° C was coagulated, and tissue that at any time did not rise above 70p C has little or no damage. An analog simulation method of calculation produced useful estimates of the extent of coagulation as a function of laser energy and beam defocussing. The new application of light emitting diodes to retinal photo-coagulation was proposed. The basic principles of these diodes, the feasibility of their application to retinal photocoaguIation, and the experimental work performed in this laboratory are discussed. It is predicted that within a year or two, an economical and practical diode retinal photocoagulator will be feasible. Methods of measuring laser energy are briefly discussed. The energy outputs of the ruby laser and the light emitting diode used in this laboratory were measured. A ruby laser head for ophthalmological surgery* having a maximum energy output of 0.05 joules and output pulse width of 0.3 mace, was constructed.
