Abstract
The permanent-magnet synchronous machine (Permasyn Motor) is an important electromechanical drive and has found many applications. This thesis studies the performance of a Permasyn motor used as a drive in a radio photo-transmission equipment. The drive is required to operate at various synchronous speeds with extremely high uniformity of speed in such an equipment. Any oscillations are highly undesirable. The variable-frequency supply feeding the drive has high internal resistance. Also, a compensating capacitor is provided on the terminals of the machine. The analysis developed in this thesis deals with starting-performance covering asynchronous and pulsating torques and stability in synchronous-operation. The damping and spring constants are found near synchronism. A model describing the stability in synchronous operation is also developed. ,The influence of variation of various parameters has been examined and discussed in detail. The investigation reveals the causes of poor starting and unstable synchronous operation and suggests the means of obtaining desirable performance.
