Abstract
This thesis provides original analysis that showcases the incredible diversity of war
resister experience and asks why media, policy, and academic conceptions of war resisters look so different from reality. In doing so, it uses an original interview and three original maps
(including one demonstrating the unity of action by border officials during the Heintzelman
affair), looks at regional variation between four distinct approaches to war resistance (exiles,
rural reformers, urban separatists, and integrationists) and it includes, where possible, evidence
of those excluded from past studies (notably families and children). Combined this original
contribution hopes to push the field forward and make future scholars critically examine the
question of who a war resister is and what constitutes resistance.
