The modem interfacing costs for connecting a central computer facility to many remote units all located in the same location, can be greatly reduced by installing a multi-drop modem. This thesis describes the development of a prototype microprocessor—based multi-drop modem for low speed asynchronous data communication. Additional remote units can be connected to the multi-drop modem. A communication link to the central computer can be automatically established for both incoming and outgoing calls. Remote-to-remote communication links can also be supported. Interface parameters such as baud rate, parity error checking and priority level are software programmable. General information on the system hardware and software is presented- Recommendations for the further development of the system are also included.
