Interest in surface application of fertilizers as a way to achieve greater operational efficiency in a farm operation is increasing. However, there are many factors to be considered that affect how this practice influences the recovery of the fertilizer by the crop. The form of nutrient and its timing of application as it relates to potential mobility and gaseous losses is an important consideration, as is the ability to reduce losses through use of inhibitors and coatings. This presentation looks at surface application of macro and micronutrient fertilizers on the prairies and the factors that need to be taken into consideration that will affect the performance of this application strategy.
