A summary of the techniques involved in the Bitter Pattern, Electron Microscope, and Magneto-Optical methods for the observation: of magnetic domains in ferromagnetic thin films is presented. The Magneto-Optical techniques are shown to be most suitable for studies of magnetic domain structures and switching processes in the magnetic thin films used in computer logic and memory devices. Factors which influence the resolution, contrast, and quality of high resolution domain patterns obtained using the Kerr and Faraday Magneto-Optical techniques have been thoroughly investigated. The results of this investigation were used to design two types of Kerr Effect microscopes and a Faraday Effect microscope for the observation of magnetic domains. Typical high resolution domain patterns which were obtained using these microscopes are used to illustrate the effects of variations in certain of the optical parameters of these microscopes. The resolutions and contrasts for these domain patterns appear to be as good as domain patterns discussed in the literature even though Polaroid HN-22 polarizers were used in the present apparatus instead of the high quality Thompson polarizers which are generally recommended. The designs of Kerr Apparatus using a Foster type polarizing vertical illuminator prism or a single polarizer are also discussed.
