dc.description.abstract | The work presented in this thesis consists of a study of the methods of biasing tunnel diodes to form bistable circuits and discusses the ways of producing a change in state (of the bistable circuit) by means of a trigger pulse. An attempt has been made to classify the various methods of biasing and triggering tunnel diodes. Trigger arrangements which are of practical interest (d.c. coupled current trigger, diode or capacity coupled voltage trigger) have been individ-ually examined in detail and estimated on a comparative basis mainly from the point of view of the speed with which a change in state can be achieved. A preliminary examination using the piece-wise lineariza-tion technique supplemented by studies using the analog and digital computers forms the general approach to the problems. The circuit configuration reported by Kaenel (1961), in which the transitions in a bistable tunnel diode are achieved by pulses of a single polarity, has been studied. The prin-ciple of operation of the circuit has been explained using a simple piece-wise linear model for the tunnel diode. Modifi-cations have been suggested and a method of intercoupling several stages of the circuit to form a binary counter has been indicated. The binary counter circuit using two tunnel diodes in series (Swamy, 1963) has been examined in detail and a parallel version has been developed. Novel tunnel diode circuits in which the transitions between the stable states are brought about by complementary input pulses have been discussed. | |
