Abstract

This thesis is an examination of the episcopate of Mgr. de Saint-Vallier, Bishop of Quebec, 1688-1727. The author provides a biographical study of the Bishop in which an attempt is made to locate Saint-Vallier in the prevailing theological currents of the century. We see that Saint-Vallier was strongly influenced by the works of the Sulpician, Jean-Jacques 0lier, and by Saint Charles Borromeo, who had been the major protagonist in the early stages of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. The author also investigates the relations between the Bishop and the governors of the colony to show that these relations were mostly harmonious and cordial.
