Abstract
LocalTalk is a simple, inexpensive system for connecting workstations, file servers and peripherals. Most of the required hardware is standard equipment on Apple Macintosh computers. Pressures to increase the network size have lead to several methods of overcoming existing LocalTalk network limits.
This thesis investigates a fiber optic link to connect two LocalTalk networks into a single network. The effect of increased link distance on the throughput of the AppleTalk data link protocol is studied. An analytical model is developed to predict the throughput of the network under varying traffic intensities and end to end propagation delays. Experimental results show only small performance degradation with up to 10 km separation between two Macintosh computer clusters.
