Abstract
The Artist’s Daughter is a contemporary Gothic novel that tells the story of Maeve Travers and her mother, celebrated artist April Travers. Known for being able to paint the exact moment her clients will die, April made her fortune profiting off of the desires of the rich and the desperate, all wanting to know how their lives will end. After she passes away under her own mysterious circumstance, Maeve is left with only a job in a small art gallery and a variety of events celebrating April’s legacy to keep her company. That is, until her mother’s bloodied body starts to appear to her. With her mother’s body looking over her shoulder and the mysterious appearance of a man willing to fund Maeve’s dream of owning her own gallery, Maeve is left to figure out what around her is real, and what is haunting her. Interspersed with memories of April’s life leading up to her death, The Artist’s Daughter weaves a tangled web of what it means to leave a legacy, how grief makes its mark, and the ever-powerful all-consuming relationships between mothers and daughters.
