Abstract
Hydroxamic acids are readily prepared by the inter-action of an ester with hydroxylamine in the presence of alkali, according to the following equation.
Compounds possessing the hydroxamate group are capable of tautomerism (I); they are strong organic acids, soluble in sodium bicarbonate solution, and when an alcoholic solution of ferric chloride is added to a solution of the hydroxamic acid in alcohol, a characteristic magenta colour is formed. This qualitative test is often employed to confirm the presence of a
hydroxamic acid.
