Abstract

In this thesis, equations are developed to evaluate the failure rate and the failure frequency of a two component parallel redundant system and a parallel redundant system consisting of series components in each branch where each component can operate in its wear out period and the failure rate of each component is not constant. The optimum maintenance interval for a two component parallel redundant system and a parallel redundant system consisting of series components in each branch such as a typical substation can be obtained using these equations. Two approaches, one analytical and the other using Monte Carlo simulation are presented and illustrated using several numerical examples. The optimum maintenance intervals obtained by the analytical method are compared with those obtained by the simulation method. The maintenance interval of each component in a parallel redundant system will depend on factors such as failure rate, repair and maintenance times of each component in the system. The two proposed methods should prove very useful in the Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) area.
