Abstract
Ukrainian Canadians have developed a distinct cultural identity that merges ancestral traditions with their experiences in Canada. Despite historical pressures to assimilate, they have actively preserved their heritage, with festivals playing a key role in maintaining and promoting Ukrainian culture. This study examines how the three festivals held in Saskatoon annually contribute to cultural continuity, intergenerational transmission, and multicultural engagement within Canadian society.
Through surveys with 30 respondents and 16 interviews with festival attendees, including one organizer, the research explores how these events develop cultural identity, social cohesion, and cross-generational connections. Findings indicate that dance, food, music, and a shared sense of belonging and community are central to these festivals, reinforcing Ukrainian identity while also serving as a bridge between different generations. The study also highlights generational differences, with long-established Ukrainian Canadians emphasizing tradition while recent immigrants call for modernization and inclusivity. Additionally, the research assesses how festivals create opportunities for cross-cultural exchange, providing Canadians with a deeper understanding of Ukrainian heritage.
By analyzing participants’ experiences and perspectives, this study underscores the ongoing significance of Ukrainian festivals in sustaining cultural resilience, strengthening community ties, and enhancing multicultural awareness in Canada. The findings highlight the festivals’ impact not only as spaces of cultural celebration but also as dynamic platforms for intergenerational dialogue and cross-cultural engagement.
