Abstract
Transplanted tumors have been widely used in cancer research for half a century. There is some evidence, however, that transplanted tumors differ in certain respects from tumors which occur spontaneously. This is particularily evident in chemotherapy screening trials which have revealed spontaneous tumors to be quite unresponsive to numerous agents which inhibit the growth of transplanted tumors.
An investigation was therefore undertaken of some biochemical properties of spontaneous mammary tumors in an inbred strain of mice, and the transplanted tumors derived from these. Tumors were analyzed for several constituents, and the relative rates of incorporation of several radioactive compounds were determined. Some factors influencing the latent period, growth rates and response to cortisone therapy of these tumors were observed.
