This thesis illustrates the Monte Carlo simulation technique and applies the method to the quantitative reliability evaluation of terminal stations. The frequency and duration method for multi-state Markov models and the approximate analytical approach based on the simplification of the frequency and duration method are also used in the thesis in order to examine the validity of the simulation approach. The reliability indices obtained by the simulation method are compared with those obtained by the analytical methods in the case of Markov models. In order to examine the precision of the simulation procedure, the mean values associated with repair durations in the Weibull distribution are assumed to be the same as that in the exponential distribution in the cases of single component system or simple substation studies. The effect on the external connection reliability indices of varying component reliability data is also studied for a specific station configuration. The simulation procedure used in the thesis can be utilised to calculate two sets of reliability indices for any terminal station configuration. This thesis provides a very useful and powerful reliability evaluation procedure for terminal stations.en_US
