Abstract
This study attempts to outline the historical development of the Taylor Statten Camps, Camp Ahmek for boys and Camp Wapomeo for girls, on Canoe Lake, in Algonquin Park, Ontario.
The investigation began by examining the life of the camps' founder, Taylor Statten, from his birth, in 1882, to the founding of Camp Ahmek in 1921. The study then follows the development of the camps by dividing the time frame into various periods. The first period involves the founding of Ahmek through to the crash of the Stock Market, in 1929. The next period of development involves the development of the camps through the Depression and the Second World War. This was followed by the period of post-war growth to the time of death of Taylor Statten, in 1956. The final section discusses the history of Ahmek and Wapomeo from the death of Taylor Statten up until the end of the summer camping session in 1984.
