Abstract
The objective of the work described in this thesis was to develop a novel life
cycle bioassay for evaluating metal mine effluent effects using the midge Chironomus
tentans in artificial streams. The bioassay was tested in situ using an environmentally
relevant concentration (45%) of effluent from the Copper Cliff Wastewater Treatment
