Telephony circuits are subject to undesirable echo and instability problems due to poor bidirectional coupling of four-wire circuits to two-wire circuits. Previous researchers have proposed separate solutions to these two problems. In this thesis a method of echo cancellation which also insures increased four—wire circuit stability is presented. Accurate impulse response identification is required for this echo cancellation method. Techniques for estimating impulse responses are discussed and the correlation technique is proposed as most suitable for this application. A laboratory model of a non-adaptive echo canceller using the correlation technique is described in detail. The accuracy of the impulse response estimate was tested by measuring the echo return loss enhancement and the singing margin improvement which were provided by the echo canceller. The results of the echo return loss enhancement tests are close to theoretical predictions and compare favourably with the reported performance of commercially available echo cancellers.
