Abstract

Multiplexed digital signals require reliable frame synchronization at the receiver in order to unpack the signals. This thesis describes a method by which this may be accomplished in the presence of channel error rates as high as one in ten. Background information on digital communications is presented. A general framing method is developed as well as design equations for performance prediction. Circuits are described that were built to test the theory and to provide an industry standard reference. Performance comparison is favorably mad to the North American TL Carrier system. Results are presented indicating superior performance at no error and useable performance at one error in ten.
