dc.description.abstract | Digital computers are being used extensively in the power industry to perform several functions. A few of these include load frequency control, economic dispatch, data gathering and others. An investigation has been made to determine the effect of a digital computer in a direct digital control mode. This thesis describes the application of a digital computer in improving the dynamic stability in a power system. Different design strategies have been used to arrive at auxiliary controllers for Saskatchewan Power's Squaw Rapids plant. A digital computer was used to control an analog computer model of Squaw Rapids and improved system damping was demonstrated. Practical implications of direct digital control have been studied with the aid of the hybrid computer facilities. A study was also undertaken for Calgary Power's Sundance plant. An optimal controller for Sundance improved the plant's damping significantly and digital computer control at Sundance appears to be the logical choice for implementation. | en_US |
