| dc.description.abstract | The primary objective of this project is to create a thematic catalogue of the works of the Saskatchewan composer Dr. David L. Kaplan (1923 – 2015) in order to produce a record and summary of his complete compositional works. The thematic catalogue will provide multiple description points for the compositions, including: musical incipits, genre, compositional dates, commission, and other details. The project involved hand-searching primary and secondary sources to extract compositional details. These details were recorded and organized in order to allow researchers to learn more about Dr. Kaplan’s compositions. Details from over 650 compositions were recorded. From the details connections can be made between the compositions and Dr. Kaplan’s life including connecting increase in solo wind instrument compositions to a sabbatical and a large amount of klezmer compositions to the forming of the Saskatoon Klezmer Band. The project facilitates access to Dr. Kaplan’s compositions for research and performance purposes as well as fills a gap in the research literature on music from Saskatchewan. | en_US |
