dc.description.abstract | The accuracy of the theoretical results obtained from stability analysis of power systems depends significantly on the selection of the parameters of the synchronous machines. These parameters are usually obtained from standard tests. The difficulties in carrying out and interpreting these tests usually result in limited accuracy of the obtained parameters. This thesis has dealt with the problem of determining the synchronous machine parameters by standstill frequency response testing. In these tests, a minicomputer is used as a laboratory instrument for fast and accurate data processing. A new digital technique is developed for the data measurements. The machine parameters are then obtained from its measured frequency response characteristics by applying a new technique developed for such a purpose. This technique is superior to the methods used previously in that it overcomes the inadequacies of these methods. The technique can be applied to obtain the parameters of the synchronous machine models with various degrees of complexities. Criteria for the initial values of the parameters to obtain an optimal set of the parameters are proposed. To examine the capability of the technique, experimental investigations were carried out on a microalternator. The comparison made between the experimental and analytical results has proven the general validity of the theoretical model. | en_US |
