Abstract
Recently Manitoba has experienced soil phosphorus (P) test levels declining into the low to very low range. This may be the result of high crop yields, an increase in crops like soybeans and canola that remove high P concentration in seed yet are unable to tolerate higher P levels in the seed row, and use of P fertilizers at rates less than removals. Traditional P fertilizer rate recommendations based on the short-term sufficiency approach do not match the removals of high yield crops and over time soils will decline into the low P category. Prairie research of soils built to higher P levels do indicate increased yield potential and profitability over the longer term.
