As an indication of the chemical reactivity of the ashes, a test showing the reduction in alkalinity of a sodium hydroxide solution in contact with the ashes and the release of silica at the same time was performed on the ashes. Similar tests were carried out on calcined samples of two of the ashes. In addition, surface area measurements were made on the ashes by the nitrogen adsorption.method, since the surface area is an important factor in the reactivity, adsorptive properties, and catalytic activity of substances.en-USAn investigation of the properties of Saskatchewan volcanic ashtext
