This thesis proposes a faster and more robust technique for detecting frame synchronization. A large serial memory is used to store sufficient history to improve the performance of a framing system. An automatic testing method has been developed which measures the means, variances and probability distributions of the acquisition and maintenance times. These performance tests show that the new technique improves reframe time by a factor of 10 when compared with standard methods. The tests also show a factor of 1000 improvement in "in frame" maintenance time when the system is used on a noisy channel.ROBUST FRAME SYNCHRONIZATION FOR NOISY PCM SYSTEMSThesis
