Item Music in Space and Time: Using Data Visualization to Understand a Local Music Collection(Music Library Association Mountain-Plains Chapter Annual Meeting, 2016-05-20) Doi, Carolyn; Bogdan, KristinCollaboration between the music librarian and data librarian led to these critical questions: What does the intersection between special collections and data management look like? How can libraries use catalogue data to create engaging visualization tools for scholarly investigation? How might we build the profile of music collections for a wider audience? In this session we will discuss the steps we took to use library catalogue data in the context of an interactive map and timeline. The catalogue data describes the Saskatchewan Music Collection, a local music collection located at the Education & Music Library, University of Saskatchewan. The collection includes primarily sound recordings and sheet music with a connection to the province, dating from the early 1900s to the current day. Creating a visualization tool allows us to find evidence of historical narratives and themes within unique or rare library materials. We will speak to some of the challenges faced during the data clean-up process using OpenRefine, the steps taken for geocoding and creating an interactive map in ArcGIS, and the considerations for setting up a data management strategy for this project. A preliminary look at the visualizations will be presented as well as a discussion surrounding the kinds of visualizations that would be appealing for music collections from a discovery perspective.Item Saskatchewan Music Large Ensembles(2017-01-01) Doi, Carolyn; Bogdan, KristinThis dataset was produced to show information about sound recordings from large ensembles (bands, orchestras, and choirs) from Saskatchewan. These recordings are found in the Saskatchewan Music Collection, held at the University Library, University of Saskatchewan. The data are modified MARC catalogue records. These data were used to create a geospatial visualization in ArcGIS (http://arcg.is/2iA5P4q). Dataset compiled by Carolyn Doi and Kristin Bogdan.Item Visualizing Methods for Special Collections: Using Library Data to Tell a Geospatial Story(2016-10-12) Doi, Carolyn; Bogdan, KristinLibrarians have a growing role in making data more visible and accessible. One way this is possible is through mining data sources such as library catalogues in order to present collections using visualization tools. This presentation focuses on how we used catalogue data from the Saskatchewan Music Collection, a local music collection located at the University of Saskatchewan, to create an interactive online geospatial visualization. The project was a partnership between the GIS librarian and music librarian, who bring diverse but complementary skills and perspectives to the project. A proof of concept map was created using OpenRefine and ArcGIS software. It was presented to a group of librarians, and initial feedback was then used to revise the visualization. Challenges and outcomes of working with library catalogue data to create geospatial visualizations will be discussed in this presentation, as will best practices for librarians hoping to develop data management, maintenance, and preservation plans. The prototype and finished product of the visualization will be presented. We conclude with discussion of some of the connections between library data management and current developments within digital humanities and academic library research.
