Nutrient export losses from agricultural soils, especially phosphorus (P), contribute to eutrophication of surface waters. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the addition of nutrients as manure and commercial fertilizer on nutrient loss in surface snowmelt runoff at the Livestock Forage Center of Excellence Research Facility near Clavet, SK. The study was conducted in a section of the hummocky landscape adjacent to the Beef Cattle Research Feedlot. Three zones within the field were set up with three replicate watersheds identified in each zone: traditional (constant rate) manure application zone, precision (variable-rate with setbacks) manure application zone, and commercial fertilizer application zone (control). Runoff water from individual watersheds was collected in 2019 and analyzed for total reactive P (TRP), soluble reactive P (SRP), nitrate-N (NO3-N) and ammonium-N (NH4-N) conce ntrations and results are reported in this presentation.
